Flu and Illness Update
Posted Date: 12/16/25 (05:29 PM)
West ISD Students, Staff, Parents, and Guardians,
Good evening! I hope you are all staying as well and flu-free as possible. Please know I am reviewing our student and staff flu and illness numbers on an almost hourly rate and am aware of our spike in student absenteeism this week from Friday, December 12, 2025. Regarding our staff, I have good news to report that we are still experiencing a low absentee rate across all campuses and district services. My best calculation for today shows a district-wide student attendance rate for right at 85%. Our average daily attendance rate is usually closer to 96%. This 85% figure equates to 203 students absent from school today.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 17, 2025, please note I am plan to meet with our campus principals and department heads to review the student and staff absentee rates when school begins and again at noon. Following these meetings, I will send out a new Parent Square with the final plan for school and other activities for Thursday, December 18, and Friday, December 19, 2025 (Early Release Day). If our student and/or staff absentee rates continue to grow, I may call for the cancellation of school.
In the meantime, please continue to encourage your student(s) to wash their hands often, cover all coughs and sneezes, and stay home if sick. The district will continue to work hard to keep all surfaces and shared spaces clean and sanitized.
Please feel free to reply to this Parent Square with any questions. Thank you for your support!
